Dogs have consistently proven their loyalty and affection to their human friends. You are probably aware that the pet will withstand any discomfort just to be near you. Look how your dog would grab any chance to sleep at your feet. We are aware of the fact that dogs are good sleepers. Dogs have an inclination to sleep the whole day. Humans that love to sleep would make use of their comfortable beds to have a good rest. Dogs love to sleep but they are not very choosy where they would bed down. In spite of the comfortable beds, dogs would still prefer to sleep at the master's feet even if it means that the sleep will be disrupted every time the master moves.
Dogs would constantly want to be with their human friends as apart from being affectionate, these pets form strong bonds with their owners. Because of the pet's tendency to stick close to the master they are dubbed as Velcro pets. Dogs have the habit of leaning on the legs of their master and once there is an opportunity, a dog would immediately sidle to sit on the master's lap.
The master's feet would not be a very comfortable place to sleep on. A dog would not mind the disrupted sleep, the sore muscles and the cricks on the neck as long as it can be close to its favorite person. Dogs are very protective of its people and the habit of sleeping on the master's feet can be the dog's way of ensuring that the master will always be protected. This habit can be the dogs way of recognizing the master as the leader of the pack. Being pack oriented, dogs would need to have a well defined hierarchy. Sleeping at the master's feet means that the dog is being submissive.
Discounting the discomfort the dog owner will feel, this habit is not really dangerous for both the master and the pet. Dog owners would normally let the dog sleep at their feet but what if the dog is a giant breed - would you have the heart to disturb the sleeping pet?
