Known as man's best friends, dogs have protected humans as well. These animals have made a great difference to the quality of people's life. On many occasions, dogs have comforted and manifested their affection to humans. These animals that are known to be highly attuned to the feelings of humans have been the silent sounding boards for man's woes and misfortunes. However, dogs are not always the tough defender of man as there are instances when the dog would need to be protected and comforted. Pet owners have to learn how to calm a dog as these animals get stressed too.
Some dogs would easily get stressed with different situation in the environment. Once a nervous dog is exposed to a certain situation, it would be tightly wound up and would bark frantically, salivate excessively and basically be a hard to control pet. Other dogs would react to the same situation in a different manner. Some dog owners find managing a stressed dog very difficult. Loud noises such as the sound of thunder and firecrackers, unfamiliar faces and places as well as new situations would trigger the nervous behavior of dogs.
If the nervous behavior of the pet is not addressed it is highly possible that the pet will develop an irrational fear to these stressful situations. The quality of the dog's life will be affected so that the dog may lose weight and be lethargic. No dog owner would want to see a pet trembling in fear and no owner would want to constantly calm the pet. Pet parents of highly stressed dogs have to find ways to calm the pet.
Pet owners should start off by knowing what situations set off the nervous behavior of the dog. However, it would not always be possible shield the dog from stressful situations thus it would be the owner's task to find means of calming the dog.
Dogs appreciate being petted. Pet owners use massage to calm the pet. Take away the nervous tension of the pet by running the hand in circular motion from the head to the rear end. Apart from being naturally curious, dogs are food motivated as well so that Kong toys will remove the dog's attention from whatever is causing the stress and the efforts to get the food from the Kong toy will eventually calm the pet. Dogs are naturally energetic. Tired dogs are calm dogs thus an owner simply need to provide the dog with sufficient opportunities to exercise. Did you know that yawning is a simple trick to calm the dog? Try yawning several times in front of your stressed pet and you will see that after a while the dog is already calmed.
