Dogs are addicting! This statement will be commonly heard from people that have dogs for a pet. Most households would have two or more pets. Dogs' loyalty and affection to the human family is what made these animals gain the title of being man's best friends. Dogs have been the companions and helpers of man for thousands of years. In spite of this fact dogs still manifest some perplexing behaviors. Pet owners are perplexed by the dog's dirt eating habit. An interesting question then is; why do dogs eat dirt?
It is necessary for a dog owner to know the reasons behind the pet's partiality to dirt so that the habit can be curbed. Parvovirus is a dreaded canine disease because of its high mortality rate. Dogs that eat dirt can be infected with parvovirus easily as the virus that is shed through the feces by an infected dog can remain on the dirt for months.
A dog that has the habit of eating dirt can be infested with whipworms. A dog that eats dirt can die from poisoning if the dirt eaten is contaminated with toxic substances like anti freeze. The dog's inclination to eat dirt is dangerous thus it must be stopped and owners can address this concern by knowing the reasons why dogs eat dirt.
Dogs are voracious eaters and eating dirt can be the dog's way of telling the owner that it is not getting enough food. Dogs though are pampered pets thus it would be impossible if owners would let the pet go hungry. Dirt eating can be due to the dog's propensity eat anything. The inclination to eat substances with no nutritional values is called pica. Pica and other unwanted habits can be the outcome of a behavioral concern. Dogs that are not provided with opportunities to socialize become problematic and hard to manage pets. Boredom may motivate the dog to eat dirt.
Dirt eating may be a sign that the dog's diet is nutritionally deficient or that the dog has a gastrointestinal concern. Eating indiscretion is a reason why the dogs has stomach upsets. Dogs that are given low quality commercial food may have sodium, iron or other mineral deficiencies. Dogs have an uncanny ability to correct an imbalance in their system. The inclination to consume dirt is a dog's effort to correct the nutritional deficiency that results from a poor quality diet. It is necessary to prevent the dog from eating dirt because of its harmful effects. A dog that eats dirt may be crying out for help.
