When you have decided to build a chicken coop, it is good if you have already an idea of where to place your chicken coop. Some of the things to consider are the climate, position, ventilation and protection.
Just like us, chickens need fresh air and enough light. So position windows to allow light to stream through during the day. A lot of people should select the right area where the coop should be placed.
The following are the four basic choices:
Placing your chicken coop directly on the soil or the ground is the cheapest and most affordable option. There are more disadvantages to this kind of foundation though, if the ground or soil is not very firm, it can turn to mud when it gets wet and rats thrive in soil. Aside from this, soil does not insulate well so you will have a problem when winter comes.
For a more durable and easy to maintain place for your chicken coop, make a concrete flooring. It is more permanent and will not cause as much problems as those that use cheaper materials. It's more expensive but in the long run you will see that you can save more by using it because you don't have to change it like when you use wood or straw.
For a flooring that is cheaper and easier to install, you can choose a flooring made of wood. Installing it will take lesser time and it is easy to clean. Problems with rats will also have to be considered if you opt for this and wood will rot especially if it gets wet.
For easier to clean flooring, you can place your chicken coop on a bed of straw, grass or sawdust. Just place the sawdust or straw on the ground and then place the chicken coop on top.
Only you can decide on where to place your chicken coop, choose the one that suits your budget and which is more convenient for you.
