Dogs have huge appetites and pet owners make sure that their pets are provided with enough good quality food. Dogs are well loved pets and some owners would even go to the extent of providing the pet with home cooked meals. However, dogs really do some very weird things. Even well fed ones would still eat non-edible things. As if it is not enough for dogs to eat spoiled food human's best friends would eat grasses and leaves, their own and other dog's feces Did you know that dogs eat mud too?
Digging like barking is a natural behavior of dogs. Dogs have ultra sensitive sense of smell. Dog owners would know that their pets are intelligent and have very retentive memories. A dog would remember the exact spot where it has buried a bone. Eating mud is associated with the dog's habit of digging and eating whatever bones and other treasures they have dug. Puppies are curious of their environment and in the process of investigating their world, puppies would use their mouth. It is believed that dogs have acquired a taste for eating mud and other non-edible objects and substances. A dog may have other reasons for eating mud.
Eating mud is believed to be the home remedy of canines for stomach upset and for parasite infestation. Stomach upset is common in dogs given their propensity to be indiscriminate eaters. Worm infestation is a common concern of dog owners because of the pet's inclination to eat feces. Some dogs are fed poor quality commercial food thus in an effort to fill up a nutrient deficiency, the dogs would eat mud.
The mud eating habit of the dog can be a sign of an existing medical concern. Your efforts to give the dog nutritious food may not benefit the pet because of a maldigestion and malabsorption syndrome. Although the dog is provided with premium quality food, the dog will still have nutrient deficiency. As mentioned, dogs have the ability to correct what is wrong with the system and in this case the dog would eat mud.
Being social animals, dogs would always want to interact with the family. This is the reason why if the dog is neglected, it would do something to gain your attention. The bored dog can be destructive or it can also eat feces, grass and mud to gain the attention of the human friends.
