The Labrador and Golden Retriever are in no doubt famous water retrievers but there is one breed that is excellent in both land and water retrieval but enjoys a rather silent popularity. This breed is none other than the Flat Coated Retriever, an excellent gundog breed which originated from the United Kingdom in the mid-19th century. In 1860, it was introduced in North America but it was only 20 years after when it was established as a stable breed.
The Flat Coated Retriever was intentionally bred to own outstanding instincts in water and land retrieval of shot birds and other game. Even then until today, avid breeders think that this breed makes a great companion in hunting and at the same time, an excellent pet for the family. Outside the house, this breed is an excellent nose for hunting but inside the house, it is an amusing creature that loves and devotes itself to the family.
The Flat Coated Retriever is more excellent compared to the Golden Retriever and Labrador as it can retrieve games in land and water, however, comparing to the two in terms of trainability, the Flat Coated Retriever falls short. It additionally gets bored easily at training sessions that are repetitive and slow. The solution then is that during lessons, the owner must make sure that it is interesting, short and varied.
The owner of this breed must exert an effort to be kind and patient in teaching this breed because it does not receive harsh criticisms and hard handling very well. Moreover, this breed loves to display its affection towards humans and animals by means of kissing them. Because of the Flat Coated's active disposition, it needs to be exercised and busied with intense activities everyday in order to keep it mentally and physically healthy. Surprisingly, the Flat Coated is inactive and calm indoors but once it is brought outside by the master, it starts to be its exuberant and boisterous self again. Additionally, the Flat Coated preceded the Golden Retriever in the US but when the latter arrived, people lost interest in the Flat Coated until its breed almost vanished but thankfully, some breeders still tried to save its existence.
People say that the stability of the Flat Coated was contributed by several dog breeds namely: the Collie-types for higher trainability, Newfoundland for more strength, and the Setter for a stronger scenting instinct. The Flat Coated was named as such due to its flat yet single-coated, fair-length, dense and lustrous coat. The standard colors of the Flat Coated Retriever are solid black and solid liver but there are some that appears in color cream and yellow, however, the breed standard considers these two colors as disqualifications.
