Did you know that rabbits are clean little critters which enjoy being litter-trained and are, therefore, happy to live in rabbit cages for safety and comfort? Different types of cages for your bunny can be store-bought or custom-made at home to suit the size of your pet as well as to accommodate your own style, preference and needs. Different styles of indoor cages and outdoor caged-in run areas are good choices to keep your pet happy and healthy.
The most important consideration is to make sure that the cage is proportionally sized to offer a comfortable living space for your rabbit. Experts recommend that the cage be at least 4 times the size of your rabbit. A cage that is 36" long, 36" wide and 24" to 36" high will give a bunny weighing 8 pounds or more sufficient living space.
A second story loft would be fun for your rabbit to have inside the cage with a ramp to access it, assuming that the height is between 24" to 36" inches. Another ramp leading from the doorway, or opening side, in this style of cage or any other would be an optimum choice so that your bunny can easily hop in and out of their little haven whenever they please. It is for this reason that a cage with a side door is preferable over a top-loader.
Your cage should have a secure locking device to ensure that it remains tightly closed, especially in the case of side doors. Otherwise, it would be unfortunate if the little furry guy or gal squeezed through, burrowed out, or got stuck in the doorway when no one was around to catch it or help it out of its dilemma!
A large doorway on the side of the cage is better than a small one so that a litter pan can be easily removed. As mentioned previously, bunny will enjoy getting in and out of its house independently. And since the best rabbit cages are constructed of wire, it would be a safety precaution to cover any doorways and door-frames to prevent an injury and to deter your rabbit from chewing away at them.
Cages with wire floors would be tough on a little bunny's tender paws. Styles with wood flooring would be much more comfy. Choosing a cage with wood-flooring treated with a non-toxic substance and which is a snug fit will ensure that it is not chewable and that it would be easy to remove and clean. A soft hay covering over the wood is a luxury bunny would enjoy snuggling into.
Hay will stay fresh, soft and dry if there is a litter box available for your pet and if the hay-bed is replaced at least weekly. You can simply brush the old hay from the wood, wipe the floor clean using non-toxic cleaners and reduce your cleaning time while simultaneously making this style almost self-cleaning - you will be as happy as your pet!
Outdoor types of cages can be constructed or prefabricated just as easily as indoor ones. A well-covered, secure, outdoor playpen area would be appreciated by your pet, but don't forget to be sure that you have laid down an indestructible floor underneath it - as rabbits love to burrow and chew.
You can be assured that predators such as cats, dogs, hawks, etc., cannot access your beloved pet and that it will not be affected by bad weather if the outdoor cage has water-proof top. As long as the cover is constructed to let in some light, your bunny might enjoy being out-of-doors in good weather while you are at work all day. Just remember to keep it out if the hot sun! A well-protected cage would also allow your pet to enjoy sleeping under the stars.
Just as it is with human housing, there are many types of rabbit cages to choose from. Regardless of style however, the bottom line remains that a happy rabbit is one with a clean, safe home.
