Pet Gecko Care Secrets

These pet reptiles are easy and inexpensive to find in a pet store. Among those that love reptiles, leopard gecko pets are extremely popular. If you are setting up initially, you will require a 15 gallon aquarium for your new family members.
You need to line the bottom of the aquarium with newspaper or paper towels but you can use commercially-available gecko substrate for your pet gecko. Inside the aquarium, you'll want to have several hiding places for your pet gecko because geckos are nocturnal and do not like to be out in the light very much. Use an upside down box with a hole cut in the side or a special dome-shaped gecko housing unit purchased from the pet store.
It is good to use a container that is enclosed and will contain some moistened paper towels or a peat. This is used as a humidity area that will allow the gecko to shed its skin. The aquarium will also need to be heated at a range between 70 to 88 degrees.
Leopard geckos eat crickets primarily, but also mealworms, silk worms and wax worms. The main diet for a gecko is crickets. A separate container used for crickets that include an apple, carrot or a potato is good preparation for nutrition since the crickets will be well fed before feeding your pet geckos.
A bowl filled with mealworms can also be placed in the aquarium tank to feed the geckos. It's best to use a smooth bowl or the live mealworms could crawl out. It is also important to have vitamins and mineral supplementation available to feed your pet geckos.
Coating some crickets with vitamin and mineral powder is a good way to feed the pet gecko with proper vitamin supplementation. Feeding them vitamins at least once a week is sufficient. Calcium supplementation is needed at least once per month. Always have an adequate amount of water handy.
The food container or bowl that you use should be shallow in order not to kill the crickets. The bowl should be cleaned regularly to lessen the chances of fungi or bacteria buildup. The pet gecko can be handled a few times a week.
Geckos prefer not to be handled too often, however they don't bite. They can appreciate the warmth of your hands, but handling them too roughly is not recommended. Enjoy watching the geckos from within their habitat can be fun too.
