How to Stop Puppies Biting
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
One of the most common ways that puppies explore their world from a young age is through nipping. They begin to learn about different flavors, textures, and tastes and to find out the things they like and those they don't. Nipping hard and biting are not acceptable however and your puppy needs to know this.
Be the Alpha Dog
The first thing you need to do is be the Alpha Dog. Below I have list a summary of the key things you can do to ensure that you are the Alpha Dog.
You go through the door first - always
Always eat before your dog.
Address disobedience the moment it happens.
Don't walk around your dog.
Give your dog its own bed; never let it sleep on yours.
Rough play encourages nipping so it should be avoided.
Never permit rough play fighting type behavior or competitive games such as tug of war. Pitting your dog against you encourages nipping and confuses your dog. You can't allow nipping in one moment and not the next.
After being bitten by your puppy, ignore it.
When you get nipped by your puppy, make a high pitched noise to demonstrate pain. Immediately after stop playing with your dog and give it absolutely no attention for a full 15 minutes. This teaches your puppy that nipping ends the fun.
Don't allow snatching of food or toys.
If your dog snatches food from your hand and nips you in the process do not give the food to your puppy. Instead turn away from the puppy for 5 minutes and ignore him. Once he has calmed down tell him to sit and offer the food to him again. This time encourage your dog to be gentle and if he is not, don't relinquish the food. Say "Gentle" in a soft but commanding way as he takes the food from you. Release the food if he is being gentle and congratulate him on the good behavior.
Be Consistent
The best way to teach your dog not to nip is to be consistent about not allowing it. If you allow it sometimes and not others your dog will be confused and keep making mistakes. Every single time your puppy nips you, you must discipline him. Start this process while your puppy is young and stay consistent until your puppy fully understands the biting limitations.
