People tend to love their pets just as much as they love their children and it makes them very sad when their pets are unhappy or sick. Pets are likely to be exposed to mites at any given time. Mites and ticks actually belong to the same subclass. Otodectes cynotis is the name of this common species. This mite chooses to live particularly in the ears of specific animals. Transmission of these ear mites can be as easy as two animals passing each other.
Several different animals are affected by this particular mite including cats, dogs, ferrets and guinea pigs. On some occasions, these mites can even affect people. Rabbits are affected by a completely different mite.
A brown crusty material located in the ear of the animal is the first indicator that mites are present. These mites will be seen as white specs living within the crusty material in the ear canal, as they do not burrow like other mites. This is the number one cause of ear infections in cats, and responsible for a great many in other animals as well.
These mites cause bacterial and yeast infections in the ears. It is easy to notice that the animals ears become red and inflamed. They will also spend a great deal of time scratching at one ear or both and shaking their head.
If left untreated the infection is likely to spread to other areas of an animal. It may continue to spread to areas of the neck and tail. The infected animal may end up with a serious skin infection or skin disease. Deafness is another real possibility for an infected animal that goes without treatment.
In order to treat the ears, all of the debris is removed first. Medication containing an antiparasitic is then used. If the person has more than one pet in the home, the veterinarian will most likely provide oral doses of ivermectin for each pet. Selamectin is available for the treatment of cats and the product is good for a month.
The mite found in rabbits is larger than that found in other animals. It is known as the psoroptes cuniculi. Instead of crusty material, it creates a thick firm material inside the ear. Over time it may spread to the outside of the ear and the face as well. Rabbits too will usually scratch and shake their heads repeatedly when they have mites in their ears. Frequently clean the cage of the rabbit to get rid of mites, and treat the rabbit with ivermectin. Another treatment suggests removing the debris from the ear and using olive oil inside the ear. The olive oil is said to suffocate the mites.
