Coping With The Anguish After Losing A Family Pet

Yesterday evening I was forced to deal with one of the most stressful predicaments cat owners will ever experience. It is never easy to say farewell to a much loved cat, however it brought everything into perspective for me and my family.
What looked like an ordinary Friday night would develop into a heartbreaking shock to my family. My cat, named Grip, was very sick in the evening. Within a few hours, my family was rushing him to the animal hospital. He had gone downhill so quick that I thought the car ride, which he never liked, would be his death. He made the trip to the pet hospital and the Veterinarian assistants hurried him in and put him on an IV and put him on oxygen. In a few minutes, he was placed on a machine for assisted breathing. The Veterinarian, that was discussing the critical situation with me, was pulled out of the meeting room because my cat had gotten far worse. Minutes later, I had a Veterinarian stating to me there was little chance that my cat would make it.
My entire world had come to a stop about 1:00 AM in the morning. There I was at the animal emergency room, with my spouse and two young kids, and was forced to make the hardest choice countless pet owners dread. Witnessing my cat in the horrible condition he was in made the decision very easy for me to make, and I did approve euthanasia. My family had a few minutes to say their final goodbyes, but not prior to a continuous flow of tears and crying. For Grip was practically sixteen years old and was a part of the family well before I married and the birth of our two children.
It's now one day after my cat's passing. After i got up in the morning, I was not met by a hungry cat that would await his morning food. Rather, I awoke to such a unbearable loss that I broke down in tears. While time will help to treat my wounds, Grip's memory will forever live on. And the fulfillment he brought to my family shall always be remembered.
Looking back on the whole situation, I have come to the conclusion that no pet owner can be ready to say goodbye. The extra problem of explaining the loss of a pet to toddlers also can make it more challenging to deal with the loss. As a parent, I could not help but feel even more pain for the sadness my children were enduring.
As pet owners, I now realize there is never a method to honestly prepare for losing a pet. The closest we could come to being ready for the moment is to have provided our pets exactly the same love they have provided to us through their entire lives. If nothing else, this significantly reduces any regrets and allows us to find peace in realizing that we loved our family pet as much as they loved us.
