Automatic Kitty Litter Boxes - How to Decide Upon a Good One?
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Though automatic litter boxes may appear, at first glance, to need less work than having to manually scoop clumps out of traditional kitty litter boxes, selecting the wrong automatic cat litter box may bring you plenty more bother than you've bargained for. Because automatic litterboxes are a fairly emerging device, lots of brands are definitely not adequately designed. Whilst in cleaning process, the gear and/or the rake can get caught on the feces and hold up. Some litterboxes have motors that are so noisy they may wake you up whilst you're sleeping. Pieces of feces could get flung outside of the litter box. Based on feedback from some frustrated owners of automatic litter boxes, it is apparent that they regret ever having picked up one.
However, not every automatic litter box have major design issues, and a lot of consumers are satisfied they made the switch. Though almost every product has the potential of malfunctioning, some are less likely to cause difficulty for their owners than others. Having used most of these things myself, and having read a lot of feedback from consumers of various brands, I made a decision to recommend the ones below as the most helpful on the market today.
1) Litter Robot
The Litter Robot waits a few minutes after your cat has left the litter box, and then drops the waste into a plastic bag underneath. It is quiet when it operates, and contains odour relatively well. Another plus is that it has low upkeep cost, as the sole things that need replacing are the plastic carrier bag (which can be any common food store bag) and premium clumping litter. Eventhough the Litter Robot may seem to cost you a lot upfront, the low recurring costs will save you a reasonable amount of money in the long run. Having used it myself, I'm very pleased with the minimal maintenance, low ongoing costs, and the efficiency of the Litter Robot, and hereby highly recommend it to you.
2) Petsafe Simply Clean
Most other automatic litter boxes are only activated to clean itself once the cat leaves, but not the Petsafe Simply Clean litter box, which runs the cleaning procedure continually. This is one of the most dependable automatic litter boxes you can obtain, as it has no accessible moving components that could possibly injure your kitty. Odors are minimal as the cleaning is continual. The only things that need replacing are premium clumping litter and plastic grocery bags from the grocery store. On top of that, in spite of the excellent quality, the Petsafe litterbox is priced rather low as compared to similar products. The only complaint from some customers is that while the litter box is operating, the softer feces could break apart into bits that are too small to get swept away by the conveyor, and end up staying inside the box until they are manually scooped out. Due to this reason, I would not recommend that you get Petsafe if your kitty has soft waste. If this problem doesn't apply to your cat, the Petsafe Simply Clean litterbox would make a terrific option by getting the job done at a reasonably affordable price.
3) ScoopFree
ScoopFree has the traditional design shared by many automatic boxes, composed from a rake that drags waste to a throwaway tray after the cat leaves. There is though one thing about ScoopFree that makes it different from other litterboxes: instead of using clumping litter that requires regular replacement, it makes use of litter crystals that can be put to use over and over again to take up fluid in the waste to cut down on odors. Along with the low upkeep costs, this litterbox has a low upfront sales cost. The sole ongoing cost is for the expendable tray, which must be replaced when it becomes full. This box is comparatively low-maintenance. However, a few users have complained about the motor being overly loud, and the odor being conspicuous. All in all, though, I would still recommend this litter box as being one of the best ones available on the market today.
4) Cat Genie
The Cat Genie has a particularly unique design, where it is linked up to the home's plumbing system and waste is mechanically mixed with a sani-solution before getting flushed down the loo. Furthermore, it does not need you to keep replacing the litter, as it utilizes special granules that are permanent and that come with the machine when you buy it. The best thing is that this box is able to look after its own cleanliness by automatically washing and blow-drying itself. Although there is the extra inconvenience of having to hook it up to your plumbing system initially, the fact that it can get rid of the waste material and maintain its own cleanliness will save you considerably more time down the road. Do keep in mind though that the Cat Genie does use a sani-solution for self-cleaning, and this will need to be ordered and replaced on a regular basis. Another downside to this litterbox is that, should it ever jam or otherwise malfunction in a way that would require the machine to be taken apart and put back together, the process can be disgusting as you would need to manually clean semi-dissolved feces. However , considering that most of the consumer feedback on this product has been good, this litter box is still commended.
You are advised to do your own investigating online before making a purchasing decision. Just do not assume that any automatic cat litter box will perform more of the dirty work to make your life less complicated - some will, and some won't. The more research you do before buying, the less probable you will end up with a massive mess on your hands and an even bigger headache, not to mention a lighter wallet.
