Tip 1 - Always walk through doorways before your dog
This is an incredibly simple but powerful way of showing your dog that you have the right of passage. Dog's can't really understand spoken language but they can understand body language very well, this gives a clear message that you are more important than the dog.
Tip 2 - Always eat fist, you dog should eat second.
In the wild Alpha Dogs always eat first. It's important that you do the same. Make sure that you and your family eat before your dog.
Tip 3 - Take immediate response to disobedience.
If your dog does something that it should never do under any circumstances (e.g. steals your food when you are not watching), take immediate controlled action to teach the dog that what it has just done is very wrong. As you catch your dog in the act you need to make some form of loud noise, clapping of the hands is a good option. Next, tell your dog to sit and then grab it by the snout (squeezing it gently) and slowly say "Bad Dog, Very Bad Dog" in a deep but controlled voice. After you have done this give your dog no attention whatsoever for 20 minutes.
Tip 4 - Don't walk around your dog.
This is a very effective way to show your dog that you are the leader. If you ever find your dog in your path, make it move - don't walk around the dog. This sounds a bit extreme but it is a measure that must be taken. This is exactly what an Alpha Dog would do if it was in your situation.
Tip 5 - Don't allow your dog to sleep on your bed.
This can be tough for some people who are used to having their dog sleep on their bed with them. But in order to show your dog that you are the boss you must not allow your dog to sleep on your bed. This puts your dog on equal terms with you and will give your dog the wrong idea. Your dog should have its own bed.
After implementing the tips mentioned above you will become the Alpha Dog. Being the Alpha dog means your dog will respect you more and behave accordingly. Your dog will also be much happier knowing its place in the relationship.
