Everybody has their own opinion on great actors and great movies. No one is more right or more wrong because it is just an opinion nevertheless it is fun to have favorites and enjoy. Some actors have immense talent, and some actors are easy on the eyes and then there are the actors that are both. We like some actors more for what they do off the screen than onscreen, as some of them are remarkable individuals who use their fame and fortune to help others and the world.
Tom Hanks is an surprising talent. It is rather outrageous that he got his start in a goofy TV show called "Bosom Buddies". Later he played an amazing role as Andrew Beckett, a gay lawyer who was infected by the AIDS virus and took on his own conservative law firm for firing him because of the fear that they may too contract the disease. Tom won his first Academy Award for that role in 1993.
His second Academy Award came just the next year making him only the second actor in history to win back-to-back Oscars with Spencer Tracy being the first back in 1937 and 1938. In 1994 Tom Hanks again took home the Oscar for his moving portrayal of Forrest Gump. He also has a list of other good movies but it is too time-consuming to cover here.
Brad Pitt has been adored for his nice looks ever since he charmed us in the 1991 film "Thelma and Louise". Although he hasn't always played the pretty boy roles. Recollect "Seven" and "Twelve Monkeys" both from 1995? Sometimes his personal life seems to eclipse his acting roles but the most impressive thing about Brad Pitt is that he has been extremely active in humanitarian causes throughout the world and he has donated large sums of his money to these causes.
When Hurricane Katrina practically wiped out the entire city of New Orleans, Brad Pitt started the "Make it Right Foundation". The foundation was formed to aid in the redevelopment of the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans. They build affordable and sustainable homes that are true to the diverse culture of the city of New Orleans. The purpose was to complete the building of the homes fast so that the residents could return to their homes as soon as possible. These things have been Brad Pitt's true success.
Which reminds me of another great actor who we lost just this past year. Paul Newman passed away on September 26, 2008. All through his life he entertained us with a lot of great movies including the "Road to Perdition" in 2002, "The Color Of Money" from 1986 and "Absence of Malice" from 1981. He also had the leading role in the well-known favorite "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" from clear back in 1969. Needless to say, he was also in many other wonderful movies, too.
Nonetheless it is his philanthropy that we can all admire. In 1982 with a associate he created a line of food products that he dubbed "Newman's Own". It started with only a salad dressing and rapidly expanded to other products including pasta sauce, lemonade, popcorn, salsa and more. When he started the company he established that all of the income generated after taxes would be donated to charity. In early 2006, Newman's Own had donated over $250 million.
Movies are pleasurable and they entertain us and we will forever have our favorite actors and actresses along with our favorite movies. They might be our favorites because of their talent or for other reasons. However since it is now possible to download free movies instantly we won't have to miss any movie from any of our favorite actors.
