Changing your name is a big decision. We have often seen people that change their birth name or change their names after divorce and stick to their name that was before their marriage. Whatever the reason, it represents a huge change in one?s life and before you decide to do so you must be absolutely sure that you really want to change your name. It costs money, after all. If the reason for changing your name is that you wish to put some old and ugly time period behind you, then changing your name can be looked at as an investment for a better future. Here are a few reasons why people change their names.
?Embarrassing Names: People change their names if they feel that their name has an embarrassing double meaning, or someone with a bad reputation has the same name. They would be the target of jokes throughout their life. For example, there are very few people today having their name as Hitler.
?Aftermath of divorce: People often want to change their name after divorce to the name they had before they were married. This might be because they want to remove all aspects of their ex-spouse and want to start a new life.
?At the time of marriage: Marriage is the time where girls may change their names to that of their spouse. Some, however, prefer to keep their old name and add their spouse?s name to it, which reflects the joining of two families.
?Immigration: On immigration into say, America, an individual with a non-American name may choose to adopt an Americanised name. This step is usually taken at the stage when the individual applies for naturalisation and chooses to file a petition for changing their name during the interview that takes place as a part of this procedure.
?Business Purpose: Some people go for a name change for business purposes. The reasons for this may vary. For example, people might want to change their name because someone in their industry has the same name but has a bad reputation and it might cause an adverse effect on their business. It is also wise to avoid a frivolous name change, so better to be cautious.
?Difficult to pronounce or spell: Some people do possess a name that is difficult to spell or pronounce. They actually think hard before telling their name to anyone. ?Whaaat??, ?How do you spell it?? ?Can you repeat it again? are the questions that people begin to ask.
?Need a shorter and trendy name: Some people often change their name because they want a shorter or trendy name. Artists, actors, poets, writers are the people who are known by their names so they want a name that should reflect their personality and for this reason they prefer to change their names.
If you are a citizen of UK and wants to change your name, you should apply to the UK deed poll office. A Deed poll must be used for legally changing your name. You can apply to the UK deed poll office online as well as offline.
