What is a Typical Background Check

Go to: Previous Article Next Article

The thoughts of someone being able to find out information about you can be quite intimidating. Thinking someone knows details about what you buy at the grocery store can be overwhelming. When people hear that they are being researched (after applying for a house to rent or employment) these thoughts run their mind. Most people do not know what is on the typical background check, so we will answer that now.

If you are applying for a job, you can count on a background check being performed on your history. Depending on the job you are applying for will dictate how comprehensive the check will be. If you are interacting with customers on a daily basis or handling any form of cash or money, there will be a comprehensive check. If you are doing none of the above, employers will generally just check your references and employment background.

Going into people's homes or handling money will ensure that you will have a detailed background check search performed on you. This is necessary to protect the finances and customers of the company.

If you are handling money or with many customers (since you will be representing the company) then you can be assured that you will have a detailed background check search imposed on you. This will include credit, criminal and sex offender search. An exhaustive financial profile may also be necessary when you apply for a job with a lot of responsibility.

Anyone that performs a background check on you will need to get permission before being allowed to do so, especially a credit report. If they are doing a credit report, they will need to confirm your social security number to be sure you are who you say you are. Always ask questions to the person that is performing the check before you give them permission.
