Driving As You Get Older
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
People are often desperate to start driving but often very reluctant to stop driving. The question of whether ageing drivers are safe on the roads or not is often the only reason people think about stopping driving all together.
People often think that they are good drivers and highly competent- it is unusual to hear somebody complaining that they are actually a less than perfect driver.
A new scheme called SAGE- Safety Driving With Age has been introduced by Leicestershire County Council recently. The scheme is run for drivers who are sixty years old and over and offers them an opportunity to have their driving skills assessed by a selection of driving instructors after a drive lasting around one hour.
The assessment does not in any way endanger your driving licence, it just allows you to get an in-depth understanding of where your strong and weak points lie. There are lots of updates and changes being made to the road system all the time so revising the Highway Code before your drive is sensible.
The actual driving is meant to be as relaxed as possible- a test type situation is not what is required. The drive itself should be pressure free.
On your return from the drive the assessor will supply you with a few pointers and discuss how you could improve your driving in general.
The main age group taking the SAGE test are those in their sixties and seventies. The assessment can also be used to install confidence in drivers as the assessor will point out your strong points too.
If you are part of the very small group who need extra help in updating their driving skills help is also on offer. The assessment team will be able to help give advice and deliver training to set you on your way to improving and becoming safer.
The scheme hopes to attract lots of people and be of help in identifying their strengths as well as their weaknesses. This can reduce the amount of accidents and motoring offences that drivers in this age category appear.
