When I started writing articles for my own projects and for my clients many years ago, the competition online wasn't as stiff as it is today. More competition online, means more writing jobs for you, if you learn how to write articles well and how to work with clients.
Website owners always need articles, so there's money to be made. But you've got to work up the article market chain in order to find where the real money is. Otherwise, you'll always earn peanuts in the bottom tier.

I've seen how many writers fail: They write, get their money and simply go on to the next article job. They forget about asking for more water from the same well. Each time you get a client add it to your list of people to touch base with regularly.
Don't be afraid to ask each name on that list what kind of articles they want. They'll tell you because they know your work and will trust that you will do the same high quality work you've done for them before.

It's very easy to get article writing jobs. However your aim is not just to get a single job, it's to get ongoing gigs, as well as gigs which are worth real money to you. This means that you need to be utterly reliable, simply because reliable writers are as scarce as hen's teeth.
Therefore, never bite off more than you can chew. Add a little time to your promised deadlines in case life gets in the way. But also write every day: put it on your calendar or day planner. For most of us, early morning is best, when your mind and body are refreshed and ready. Do the work and turn it in on deadline and your clients will beat a path to your door, waving money for more of your articles.
