Lately, there has been a lot of buzz about fiber optical cables. But what are they and what can they do for your business? Is the current cabling infrastructure of your business obsolete or at risk? Why should you be interested in fiber?
Many companies of every size are converting their current cable infrastructures from Ethernet cable to fiber. Some of them may not even realize why they are doing it aside from that a technology guru told them that they should. Well, there are some reasons to upgrade to fiber optical cables, but you will need to determine if your business needs it.
To begin to understand, you should be familiarized with Category-5 cable, the industry standard. Otherwise known as Cat-5 and Ethernet, it is comprised of four copper wires that are twisted together. It looks very similar to phone line, except it is thicker and has bigger jacks called RJ-45. Data is transmitted through Ethernet as electrical signals and can reach 10 megabits per second. Cat-5e, also known as Category-5 Enhanced or gigabit Ethernet, is one hundred times faster at 1,000 megabit per second. The electrical signals can be transmitted only up to 300 feet through the unshielded cables that degrade can be easily exploited.
Fiber uses light rather than electrical signals to transmit data. Transmission bandwidth of fiber far exceeds even Cat-5e. In fact, the true maximum bandwidth throughput of fiber is still unknown. Light can also travel substantially farther in fiber, over 1,500 miles in some optical cables (not that you would need that for your business).
Additionally, there are two substantial advantages to fiber in a business environment. First of all, fiber does not degrade and is not susceptible to interference like Cat-5. The result is that fiber does not waste bandwidth or lose quality. Cat-5 on the other hand can be easily interfered with when it is placed near other Cat-5 cables, phone lines, or power cords.
But the most important thing fiber offers is unparalleled security. Ethernet uses copper wire, which can easily be intercepted with cheap tapping devices. These devices can be installed by corporate spies or disgruntled employees and cost next to nothing. Even worse is that they are nearly impossible to detect without visually inspecting every inch of all Ethernet cables. On the opposite side of the spectrum, any break in fiber will cease its transmission capabilities and any attempted intrusion will easily be detected.
Overall, fiber optical cables offer better transmission and far superior security than their copper counterparts. If your business has fears of corporate espionage or inside threats, fiber is definitely an upgrade that you cannot afford to pass up.
