The key to a persuasive marketing material is a good design. When you print brochures, posters, or post cards, you do not simply focus on the overall look of your material, but rather on the design and content of the copy. You do not have to be a graphic designer to produce an exceptionally compelling material. You can be your own visual artist and art director and organize your own quality visual work.

Many business owners fail in the design area when it comes to their copies. Oftentimes, they try to congest everything in a small space thinking that this is the best way to get their message across. But a good design is more than chunks of texts and images spread out in an empty space. Design is a form of communication art that presents a message in an artistic way. So, if you are a business owner seeking to produce materials that effectively and creatively communicate a message, here are pointers for you consider:

1. A good design is more than what meets the eye. Keep in mind that the goal of your material is to communicate an idea. So, it is important that you create a design that focuses more on the function more than the look. Though you desire to create a visually appealing poster or brochure, you still need to consider the intellectual aspect of your copy. If you do not have a clear and concise message, you do not have in you a good design.

2. Your design should not be about you. A good designer creates materials that are aimed at answering the customer’s need, while a bad designer designs materials that are intend for his own personal intention. He creates designs that will not address the customer’s need but rather make his portfolio look good.

3. A good design communicates the benefits of your products or services effectively. Have you ever asked yourself what really makes someone interested in looking at your brochure printing or poster prints? Is it to know what they can do for you or how they can help you achieve your goals? Wrong. Whatever your products or services are, no matter how good they look, a customer would always want to know what benefit they will get from what you are offering. They will, after all, invest their hard-earned money and time in your products so naturally they would want to know what they will get in return. So, create a design or message that would clearly communicate your benefits to target customers.

4. Create a design you believe in. This is the same as creating products you believe in. If you create a product that stinks, people are likely to stay away from you. A poorly designed material will also discourage people from taking notice of your material. So, you need you believe in your design and your products so as not to compromise your materials.

5. A good design uses good principle. The design for a small business is not the same as the design used in a multinational business. So, an elaborate marketing material for a small business on a limited business is not appropriate. Take note that design and marketing ideas for small and big business are very much different. So, be wary of the design principles you apply.
