Effective Article Titling - Part 2
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Just like how most people make some sort of impressionistic opinion about another in the first few minutes of a new encounter, readers are doing the same with your article titles! It's like starting a new relationship! Let's not forget that there is always a human being on the receiving end of your writing...which begs the question: well what drives human beings? If you pause for a moment and think about what really is at the cause of 99% of our behaviour, you will most likely trace it back to some FEELING we had. This can be any colour of our emotions - love, anger, joy, sadness, intuition....and the shades go on.
There's no way we can make them disappear. It's ticking away in our neuronal machinary! Thing is, our emotional mind is embedded deep within our brain and if you know how to access it proactively, there is no stopping you from channelling it to your advantage and your readers.
Therefore, understanding the nature of our emotions means we can ultimately stream them to our intended purposes with greater predictability in results. Wouldn't you want to see that in your business?
It's a two-way street! You must know your inner nature before really being able to empathise with your target audience. After all, besides having different coloured skin, eyes hair....aren't we all the same? We share way more similarities than differences (the Human Genome Project has already proven that!). This commonality we all share is the reason why leveraging our emotions is so powerful. Learning the art of generating positive emotions in people is really a golden skillset to master!
...Much like the colourful ways music is strung intricately to stimulate a feeling within your body...
So how can you begin to put this to practise in your article titles?
For any written piece, you may have several article titles drafted down...walk away from them for a few hours then read each one to yourself quickly...then you close your eyes...
Which title or titles jumped out at you?
How did you feel after reading each one?
Do the article titles address a problem that your audience is likely to be struggling with?
Do the article titles communicate to their deep-seated desires for their business?
Do the article titles communicate a solution to help eradicate their most deep-seated fears?
Do they spark inspiration?...
The list goes on, but you get my drift.
Finally, how do you decided which is the most appropriate title?
In short, your gut feeling will tell you. Ignore the rationalisations and if you feel the way you would like your reader to feel, go with that one. Don't get too bogged down by the exercise, because after all, we can never control how anyone responds 100% of the time. That's the decision we leave for our readers! However, it is our responsibility to give people the best possible chance of seeing what we have to offer. That being said, I hope you found this article helpful. There is no other skillset more commonly used in your business as writing (sales pages, article marketing, emails)! In other words, it will certainly pay you dividends if you wholeheartedly invest in this skill.
