If you're looking for a simple online business you can start completely for free, look no further than "money blogging." If you understand that while a blog is no get-rich-quick scheme, it is however a great way of making an income online, you'll succeed.
Firstly something about me. I've been blogging since 2000, and have many blogs. If you want to make money online, a blog is a great way to start, because you can earn as you learn. Here's how to get started.
1. Choose a niche in which people are spending money. If people aren't spending money in your niche, your blog will never make money. Therefore your first step when considering a niche is to find out whether people are actually spending money online in that particular niche.
Visit the topic blogs in your chosen industry. Work out how they are making money. They may be selling affiliate products on commission, or selling advertising. Perhaps they have paying subscribers.
2. Decide what you'll sell on your blog. Once you've discovered that people are spending money in your niche it's time to find out what others are selling. Check out the other blogs in the niche, and look at their advertising carefully. It's usually fairly easy to see how other bloggers are making money, and if they're making money, so can you.
Often, new bloggers want to find topic areas in which there's no competition. This is impossible. Any area which is commercial has already been colonized by other bloggers. This is fine. Audiences grow too.
3. Understand that content plus promotion equals traffic. This is a simple formula to follow to make money on your blog. Write interesting content, and promote that content. You'll get traffic. Ideally it will be traffic which converts -- that is your traffic will buy from your blog, even if they merely click on an AdSense link.
4. Once you have content, you will focus on driving traffic to your blog. This traffic must be traffic which is targeted, and which brings you an income. Many sources of traffic are useless, so you need to experiment and test, to see where your best traffic is coming from.
That's your blogging guide in a nutshell: choose a commercial topic, decide on a monetization method, create content, and promote your blog to attract traffic. If you keep these four recommendations in mind, you'll create a successful blog.
