Magaliesburg has a rich history, one that saw a lot, gave a lot and took a lot.
Taking and giving in the Cradle of Humankind
The discovery of the remains of the earliest fossils of close relatives of the humankind known today, nicknamed Mrs. Ples, was found at the Sterkfontein Caves, by Dr Robert Broom, 30 minutes drive from Magaliesburg, gave Magaliesburg worldwide recognition.
More recent history (mid 1800's) the brutal feet of the northern tribes ploughed through the of Magaliesburg, bringing war and grief to the once quiet bushveld paradise. Moving on, peace returned, not for long though, as the peace was disturbed and a war was sparked, when the Impis of Mzilikazi attacked the quiet valley of the Magalies, capturing women and enslaving the young ones and the men, to be incorporated into his legion.
Later, still in the 1800s the white tribes arrived from the South, also seeking their piece of this unspoilt bushveld paradise and with firing guns, the local tribes retreated and the invaders hunted down herds of game, on a daily basis and very soon, the numbers of wild game was cut down to the bare minimum.
1 October 1899 saw the war between the two "White Tribes", the Brits and the Boer Republics of the "then" Transvaal, and the Orange Free State. While it only lasted a year, lives, blood and sweat were lost between these two tribes, war zones include the Magaliesberg valleys, Kommando Nek, Nooitgedacht and along the mountain side.
Since peace was declared the at turn of the last century, roundabout 1902, this paradise was blisfully peaceful, where man has lived in a peaceful co-existence with nature, farming the land and toiling with the historic truths of democracy. Magaliesburg Accommodation caters for everyone, with Guest houses, Lodges, Game reserves and Self catering units in it's midst.
Magaliesburg, as we know it today, has developed into a peaceful haven, with a multitude of tourist attractions, including a variety of hospitality venues, where every human being descendant of the earliest species of mankind, is welcome to "rest" for a while, soaking the peaceful atmosphere and relax in the beautiful paradise, for one more time.
