1] Colorado Springs is just over 6000 feet above sea level which makes it a little higher than Denver. It is protected against the harshest of weather namely the two natural barriers consisting of the Rocky Mountains to the west and, to the north, Monument Divide. In the late 1800's, the city was frequented by a large number of tourists from Britain who came here for the weather as well as the spectacular views and this gave rise to the nickname "Little London".
2] The famous American physicist, Nikola Tesla, who was Serbian by birth, built himself a lab in Colorado Springs in 1899 to conduct experiments on the transmission of electrical power wirelessly. The lab was situated at the present junction of Kiowa and Foote streets and is now a private residence.
3] The use of fluoride as a chemical in the treatment and prevention of tooth decay has its origins in Colorado Springs. Dr. Frederick McKay was investigating the Colorado Stain which is common among the teeth of people who drink a lot of the spring water. In 1909, he discovered the connection between the fluoride in the spring water and the protection against tooth decay.
4] Peterson Air Force Base was originally called Colorado Springs Army Air Base and established on April 28, 1942. This was the site of the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport which has been in use since 1926. The first objective of the base was to train Air Force personnel in photographic reconnaissance and more than 20 squadrons were trained for combat duties between 1942 and 1943. On August 8, 1942, Lt. Edward J. Peterson, who served as the operations officer of the 14th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron and himself a Coloradan native, was killed in an air crash when the engine of his airplane failed while taking off. On December 13, 1942, the name of the base was changed from Colorado Springs Army Air Base to Peterson Air Force Base to honor the dead pilot.
5] Colorado Springs is situated in El Paso County in the Pikes Peak region of Colorado. Katherine Lee Bates composed "America the Beautiful" when she was inspired by the view from the summit of Pikes Peak, near Colorado Springs. It prides itself on a high quality of life and was recently voted by Money Magazine as the most desirable city to live in the United States. It began in the late 19th century as a spa in the Victorian style and is now the second largest city in Colorado after Denver.
6] Colorado Springs currently has approximately 380,000 residents with a median age of 36 years. Of the working age population, just over one out of every three people work either as a professional or a manager. A quarter of the working age population work in service industries and the average household income of the city is at just over $45,000 per year and is higher than the national average.
