Longmont, Colorado is situated in Boulder County and is spread out over 22 mi.?. It is blessed with more than 300 days of sunshine every year and offers spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains. Situated at an elevation of just under 5000 feet above sea level, it is a perfect location for any lover of nature because of the 1500 acres of parks and open space that surround it. It is home to several high-technology companies and also features a highly attractive restaurant scenario. The location is extremely convenient because it is only 37 miles from Denver and 16 miles from Boulder.
It is a diverse place that houses many cultures and the friendly atmosphere makes it easy for people to connect with other people and become part of the local community. There are many local nonprofit cultural organizations who would welcome your participation in their activities as well as local traditions. It is not surprising that in both 2006 and 2008, Longmont was named by Money Magazine as one of the Top 100 Best Places to Live in the United States coming in at numbers 61 and 50 respectively. This says a lot about the quality of life.
Longmont was established in 1871 by a group of people who came from Chicago. It was initially called the Chicago-Colorado Colony and memberships in the town were sold to pay for the acquisition of land for the town hall. It was the first planned community in Boulder County and the streets were laid out in a grid. The city flourished as an agricultural community after the railroad arrived from Boulder. In the 1960s, the government constructed a large air traffic control center while IBM built a large manufacturing facility close by. Later a number of high-tech companies such as Seagate and Amgen moved to the city and GE Energy relocated their control solutions business to Longmont. Main Street which was nearly defunct in the 1980s has seen a major revival in recent years.
Longmont has quite a lot to offer when it comes to education. The Institute of Business & Medical Careers established its latest campus here in September 2010. The Institute provides full support for students who want to make it a career in business or in the medical profession. It is also home to a branch of Regis University as well as the Boulder County Campus of Front Range Community College. There are also a number of private schools including the reputed Bloom! Montessori School.
