Boulder County ranks number six in population among the 64 counties of Colorado. The county seat and the biggest municipality in the county is the city of Boulder. According to the 2010 census, the population was just under 295,000 and the county has an area of around 750 mi.?. Boulder County is one of the original 17 counties created in Colorado on November 1, 1861. The name of both the county and the city comes from the many boulders that can be found in the vicinity. It has retained essentially the same boundaries though around 27 mi.? and 40,000 people are now part of the city and county of Broomfield.
According to the census of 2000, there were 271,651 people, 114,680 households, and 68,808 families who live in the county. The racial composition is predominantly white [over 88%] with the balance of the population being African American, Hispanic and Asian. The median income for a household in Boulder County was just over $55,000 and the median family income was just over $70,000. Median income for men was around $48,000 white the figure for women was around $32,000.
The county is divided into three districts which are each represented by an elected commissioner. The three commissioners constitute the County Board of Commissioners which represents the county as a whole. The board supervises the management of 10 County departments and also approves and oversees the budget for the county. In addition to the commissioners, and there are seven other elected officials including the district attorney.
Gunbarrel is a developed part of Boulder County but not an incorporated town or village by itself. Because of this, locations can often have postal addresses that show the city as Boulder or Niwot. According to the census in 2010, the population was 9263. Locally, Gunbarrel is often used to describe a larger region that includes part of Boulder city as well as some rural locations. Niwot Colorado had a population of 4160 according to the 2000 census and gets its name from a local Indian chief in the 19th century. The name means "left-handed" and the town is one of the 20 wealthiest places in Colorado. There were 1,502 households, and 1,094 families living in the place according to the 2000 census. The median income for a household was just under $87,000 while the figure for a family was just over $100,000. The figure for men was just over $81,000 while the corresponding figure for women was just under $40,000.
