American Dental Association - A brief history

American Dental Association is a certified society for dentists, founded in New York in 1859 by twenty-six scientists who belonged to various different societies of science in the United States. The main person who brought forth the idea of an organization to bring together all dentists of the world and set the right code of ethics for dentistry was William Henry Atkinson.
In the early 1800's, dentists were not trained properly and due to their negligence and lack of practical skills, many patients were always in the process of treatment while the others died of their illnesses. So, proper regulations and code of ethics were required for the field of dentistry, which would also set legislation for dentists so that fake dentists won't be able to harm people with their false appearance.
Today, the association has 400 workers in its headquarters in Chicago, and approximately 152,000 members who are mostly professional dentists and some who are getting trained and ready to enter the professional field. The organization has approved nine areas of expertise of dentistry; dental public health, orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatrics and oral and maxillofacial radiology.
The American Dental Association launched careful guidelines for testing and advertising of dental products in public. It also takes steps to promote dental healthcare and awareness of dental problems and precautionary measures to avoid these problems.
The Paffenbarger Research Center (PRC) carries out all dental related studies, while the American Dental Association Foundation (ADAF) is a charitable foundation which grants charity for dental research, education, scholarships and aid to dentists and their patients who are unable to sustain themselves due to some disease or injury.
The law-making body of the association, the House of Delegates comprises of 460 delegates who represent 53 dental societies, 5 federal dental services and the American Student Dental Association, all of whom meet once in a year at the annual meeting to discuss various issues and progresses in the dental field.
The American Dental Association also supports many law-makers in the U.S. Congress to direct the government in funding, supporting and promoting dental awareness and researches around the globe for a better future.
