What Types of Siding are Best for Your House?

For those unfamiliar with the world of siding it may seem as simple as picking out the color you want. Experienced builders know that’s not the case. There are four different types of siding and then subcategories among those four. So before getting started on your home improvement project you should know what type is best for you and your house. The four base categories are wood, aluminum, vinyl and cement fiber.
Wood siding has been around virtually since the beginning of people building houses in mass production. The price range for it is reportedly inexpensive and cheaper than all the others. This is true in some respect but not true of all types of wood that is used in siding. While extremely versatile in texture and color options, it is also prone to weather and insect damage. Wood also requires a great deal of regular maintenance in order to keep it in good shape. This includes the need to repaint on almost an annual basis. Within the wood family there are four variations. These include vertical, horizontal, plywood and wood shingles.
The second most common option is aluminum siding. This is the opposite extreme of wood when it comes to maintenance. The only thing this type needs is a good pressure washing to keep it clean. The paint may become chipped or a panel dented. But overall it will last for decades. The downside is that if you want a good selection of what your house can look like then you don’t want to choose aluminum.
Vinyl is the next step on the evolutionary ladder of siding. This cannot be painted therefore the upkeep or maintenance is less than the aluminum version. The looks of this are similar to that of the aluminum and as such follows the limited selection of choices in color and texture. Vinyl is not recommended for cold climates. It is vulnerable to extreme cold temperatures and therefore may be likely to break or crack.
Cement fiber is the newest addition to the siding family and the most versatile to date. It has all of the benefits of aluminum and vinyl by being maintenance free. But it looks like wood and has as many aesthetic possibilities as wood. It seems to be the perfect marriage between décor selection and low maintenance. The only issue that may come up is the price. It is considerably more expensive then all of the others.
So which one do you choose? Well that comes down to what’s important to you. Is it price, looks, or the amount of maintenance required? How many people are going to help you with the project? Is it something that requires two or more people? Also consider the weather of the area you live in. For example, even if vinyl fits your other requirements, if you live in a cold area you shouldn’t get it. The idea is to get the perfect covering to keep your home safe from the outer elements, animals and insects. If you’re just not ready for new siding then maybe repair what you have or repaint your wood.
