Simple Ways To Install Roller Shades
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Problems like a hot room, harsh light on the TV and annoying neighbors can be easily solved with the installation of roller shades.
While there are many choices to make in order to get shades, the first decision should be where to mount them. Roller shades can be mounted inside or outside. The window shades will be fixed to jambs on both sides if mounted inside and will fit to brackets if outside. To complete an inner mount, the width and length will show which shades to buy. Start by finding the measurements of the middle, top and bottom of your window. The width with the smallest amount will also be the shade width. The long part of the window correlates to the shade length. For outer mounting, choose where the shade top with go and how much it will go out to the left and right.
After the final choices, begin to install the window shades either inside or out. To complete an inner mount, be mindful of making sure the window shades do not touch the top of the window frame or any else that will prevent easy movement. The brackets must be on the inside of the frame and level.
To perform an outer mount, the roller shades must again not touch the frame top of anything else that will prevent free movement. The brackets are installed with the same rules: level and aligned. The window shades, if installed correctly, will have easy movement. Allow about 1/8 inch of free space for easy rotation.
If neither outer nor inner installation of roller shades if appealing, the ceiling mount option is always available. However, this will happen outside. Remember not to allow the window shades to come into contact with the ceiling top or anything else that may prevent smooth movement. Brackets will go on the ceiling and should be correctly aligned and leveled. With correctly installed brackets, the window shades will flow very easily and smoothly. Again, remember the 1/8 inch of free space for comfortable mechanism movement.
There are two main types of shades: continuous loop and spring roller. When installing spring rollers, place the window shades in the brackets, then insert round end pin into circle hole. The same steps apply to the other end of the window shades. When performing installation of continuous loops, press the plastic inserts into mounted brackets. Afterwards, place window shades in plastic insert. Place round pin of roller in plastic bracket/insert.
After finishing installing, do not forget to test the roller shades carefully in order to ensure proper functionality. Spring shades are usually lowered 16 inches from top in order to tighten the spring. Lift the shade from the bracket and roll upwards. Put the window shades back in place and see if the spring is tight enough. After installing a continuous loop, the clutch can be removed in order to adjust the position of the chain stop.
Most roller shades come with instructions. However, if the window shades are re-installed because they were used elsewhere, they may need adjustments by a local hardware store professional.
