Log Cabin Decoration In The Early Days
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
There is a huge movement in our country and around the world really to return to simpler times when it comes to the way we live. People are learning that they can live in smaller places don't don't require as much resources to build. They want to use more solar energy and less water. The more each of us can reduce our environmental footprint the better. Of course, people don't want to give up electricity or hot running water, but they are just trying to find better ways to have it.
Pioneer people were forced to live this way many years ago because it was the only choice they had. They often traveled into unknown wilderness with very few possessions with them. When they got to where they were going, there were no towns and shops with goods ready for them to buy. They had to clear their own roads and homesteads so they could build a proper home which was usually a log cabin just big enough to live in until they could eventually build a little bigger and better.
Since they usually didn't have furniture when they got where they were going, it had to be constructed by hand from whatever trees were in the area they settled. They made log beds, rustic chairs and tables. Their furniture was functional in the extreme and there was not much fancy about it. The intricately carved furniture that was brought over from Europe by some people would have been much too fragile to survive the journey westward and would have been a little out of place in such wilderness.
While rustic log furniture was definitely a part of the first cabin decoration, so were other things like hand woven blankets and pottery made by the Native Americans. These things were purchased from the few stores that sprang up from place to place or through direct trade with the Native Americans. These items are still commonly seen in cabins today because they provide that original feel of what a cabin looked like in those days.
Of course, things like animal antlers are still seen in cabins today too as well as lanterns. These were cabin decorations that were also functional in some way. When cabins or log homes are decorated today, people incorporate things like hand crafted log furniture, hand woven blankets and rugs, and animal decorations because it makes their home look original. There are plenty of websites on the Internet where these types of items can be purchased specifically for cabin and log home dcor.
