Persian rugs are extremely popular. They are exquisite in nature and they are very pricey. In fact, Persian rugs are referred to as the Queen of rugs. The Persian rugs have two different classifications namely Persian Tribal Rugs and Persian City Rugs. The rugs under each category are generally named after the tribal name or city name where they are manufactured. Let us take a look at some of most popular Persian rugs.
Persian City Rugs
Tabriz rugs: The designs here are curvilinear. However, geometric designs can also be found. They come with symmetric knots and the rugs come with numerous colors. Most of the Tabriz rugs come with common border and background colors. The colors generally used for border and background are peach, pink, beige, camel and ivory. These rugs have pastel looks. The foundation for these rugs is generally wool pile and silk and the rugs have silk highlights.
Afshar rugs: These rugs are small and they generally have geometric patterns. Some of the most common designs are multiple diamond shaped medallions connected with each other, botehs, All-over gul farangi, Afshar-e-Morghi etc. The colors which are mainly used are reddish brown, dark reddish-blue, burnt orange, camel, ocher, dark blue, brown and dark red. These rugs generally have woolen foundation but cotton foundations can also be used at times.
Kerman rugs: They mostly have curvilinear pattern. These rugs are of pictorial category. Kerman designs which are traditional include stripes, boteh, prayer, paneled garden, all-over floral, garden, vase, animals, hunting and European and Persian pictorial themes. There are modern versions as well which include Aubussons (Koran or Quran) corners-and-medallion with open field. The commonly used colors are beige, champagne, orange, turquoise, gray-blue, ivory, pink, lime green, red-blue and rich red.
Kashan rugs: These rugs have curvilinear pattern. Lobed and diamond shaped medallion with elegant floral pendants are the most popular designs. These rugs generally use the following colors as main colors: ivory, beige, rich red and navy. However, other colors like turquoise, blue, red, ocher, brown, white, beige are also used.
Persian Tribal Rugs
Wiss rug: This is a handcrafted tribal rug from the Wiss village. They traditionally have floral patterns which are dense with foliage, vases, palmettes and different garden elements. Burgundy or dark red shades are mainly used as colors.
Shiraz rug: These are handcrafted rugs from Shiraz located in Central Persia (Iran). Designs generally include plants, small animals and geometric motifs. The selvages have a barber pole effect. The main color used is red.
Baluch rug: Nomadic people from the Baluch tribe located in the southern part of Iran make these rugs. The follow the ancient rug making tradition of Persia. The designs are unique and they have an overall pattern. Rich burgundy is the main color used in the rugs. However, ivory and sometimes navy are also used.
