A Primer On Bedding

Eventually everyone needs to buy some new bedding. There are many different items that make up what is generally termed bedding and a little bit of knowledge about these items can help you decide what you need and what you don't in your bedroom.
You always start with a bed frame. This is what holds your headboard and your foot board together. Then the box springs fits on the bed frame. The box springs is a wooden frame with metal springs that supports the mattress on top. The top mattress has coils inside to absorb the weight. These coils are supported by filling and how much filling is used determines the firmness of your mattress. On the top of the mattress you may have what is called ticking. This is the thinner mattress look that goes over the full length of the top of the mattress. It may have a feather bed on top of the mattress and this is stuffed with soft feathers that are used for comfort.
Well now what goes on top of the mattress? A sheet set's quality is determined by the thread count. The thread count is the number of vertical and horizontal threads per square inch. The higher the thread count the softer and more durable the sheets are. Sheets are made from several different materials but they all either fall under the category of being natural or synthetic. Synthetic material is man-made and artificially created. Most sheets are then covered by a coverlet, a term used to describe any duvet, bedspread, comforter, blanket, or quilt. Duvets are thick and usually filled with down feathers and are ideal for winter weather. Quilts tend to be thinner and are made of hand-stitched pieces sewn together with decorative cross-stitching. You will no doubt find some form of coverlet comes in handy and even if it's always warm coverlets can add a touch of style to your bed.
Canopies can hang in one of two ways. If you have a poster bed then the canopy can be stretched from pole to pole. The other method for hanging the canopy is straight from the ceiling over a hoop which spreads the canopy over the bed. Canopy beds can add an elegant, romantic touch to any bedroom. Canopy bed frames are offered in a number of different styles from contemporary to classic. Once you have the frame the canopy itself can be as simple a s a piece of fabric. In fact if you get it cut right you may not even need to sew anything.
Knowing the facts about beds can help you pick the right bedding for your bed. When adding new bedding to your room you want to pick out a couple of accessories that will blend well with your new look. Add picture frames, lamps, candles and soft lighting to create a new and relaxing atmosphere. An area rug is also important to include in your new look. Purchase a color that stands out to you and is welcoming.
