Indeed, the metal halide light bulb needs ballast for it to work. These lights require a high voltage to start. When there is the increase of arc, the internal vapor pressure increases as well until it reaches the required amount. The light intensity would then be strong until it reaches the utmost level.
You have to know other things when you are about to use metal halide to grow plants. Respectively, these are: you have to make sure that you know the right temperature the plants need; you need to get ballast that is right for the temperature of lights that you will use and; you have to make sure that you have the right number of cooling fans to avoid making the place hot.
There are also some ingredients that you could use for making sure that it would be suitable for the plant growth. There are types of metal halide lamps that are used for things like slide projections and movies too. Also, there is the indium that is usually used since it emits the small and intense high-brightness of arc.
