Tips On Increasing The Life Of Your Flower Arrangements

When you finally, after all the hints and messages, get a bunch of flowers delivered it can make you feel very special. Whether it's for your birthday, anniversary or just because, you want to make sure that your flowers will stay as fresh as possible for as long as possible. So here we have complied a few hints and tips of the trade on how to keep the flowers fresh for longer especially during the hot summer months.
The cut ends of flowers have natural sap in the stems which seals the cut ends to prevent further loss of moisture if the flowers are broken off. Even if flowers are placed back into water after they have sealed up they will not last for very long. It is therefore very important to make sure that when you receive your flowers one of the first things you do before putting them into water is to cut the ends off the bottom of the stems to remove the natural barrier.
Place your freshly cut flower arrangements in a vase containing plenty of fresh water and if possible add a sachet of flower food to the water to make sure that the flowers get all the nutrients and water that they need to survive for a long time. If the flower stems have any leaves on which might be below the water line then make sure they are removed. Not only will the leaves suck precious nutrients and water away from the flowers but they will rot in the water and pollute the water for the rest of the flower.
Some people have suggested in the past to bash the stems of the cut flowers to improve the lifetime of your flowers. However this doesn't actually help as the capillary tubes in the flower stems which transports water to the flower heads, will be damaged and will no longer work efficiently to move water up the stems.
Especially when the weather is hot, it is important to locate your flowers in a suitable spot. If you stand your flowers in direct sunlight they will quickly dry out and wilt. The best spot for your flowers is a cool spot where you can walk past them and see them in their full splendour. Try not to put your flowers in hot conservatories or on hot window sills where they might get hot from the direct sunlight and wilt reducing their life.
If possible look to change the water in the vase every couple of days, and if you have time, re-cut the stems at the same time as again the cut ends of the flower will seal up over time. This is particularly important if you don't use a see through vase as you can't see what is happening to the water in the vase. It isn't particularly nice to have to tip a vase full of smelly water down the sink. Some summer flowers are known to pollute the water in the vase more than others, so their water should be changed every day. Stocks, nigella, statice and larkspur are some of the worst flowers for making the water quality poor over time. Add fresh flower food to the water when you change it and this will help to keep them blooming for longer lasting and smelling fresh.
Once you have done all these things then you should benefit from a much longer lasting display and perhaps you can make an excuse that your flowers are lasting so long that your partner doesn't need to buy you flowers so often!
