At least once in every adult's life he or she should start his own garden. There is a lot of happiness and joy to be found in the growing and nurturing of a garden. Even if you have zero experience with gardening you should be able to grow at least a few simple plants in your first garden. With the wide variety of information that is available all over the place for beginner gardeners today there is absolutely zero reason that you too cannot have a very successful garden when you are just starting out. Obviously gardening is not simple. It can be very difficult work sometimes! Here are some great hints for new gardeners who want to start their own gardeners.
Try to prevent your seedlings from totally drying out. It is true that there are a lot of different types of plants that thrive in dry soil conditions but that doesn't mean that you can let them dry out completely. Every single seedling you grow is going to need to be watered. You don't have to let your seedlings sit in mud, obviously, but you need to give them at least a little bit of moisture if you want to keep them alive. The level of water you will need to give to your plants is dependent up on the types of plants that you want to grow. Before you put your seedlings into your garden plot learn everything you can about how much water they need and how often they need it. Drying out and drowning are both bad.
Most of gardening is nothing more than sticking to a schedule. Over time you will figure out a schedule and eventually you will just know what needs to be done without having to think about it. You will learn when to do the weeding, how to check to make sure the garden is not drying out, when to add nutrients and when to add compost to your garden. Let yourself figure out your own gardening schedule and then just stick to it. Lots of beginning gardeners have gardens that die because they don't realize how much work is actually involved in keeping a garden alive and thriving (or they simply stop caring).
Don't spend a bunch of money on tools from the garden department just because you see them by the register. Start with a few things you know you'll need (spades, rakes and hoses) and then build your collection slowly from there. Over time, as you work with your plants, you'll figure out which tools you actually use regularly and which are only used for special projects. Try to resist buying a bunch of things that the garden department clerk tries to convince you that you need but that you probably won't ever use. You could end up throwing away a lot of money on things that you will rarely (if ever) get to use!
Lots of grown men and women view gardening the same way little kids view playing outside. Many people have reported that gardening is their method of working through stress and other tensions they face in their daily lives. Still others insist that gardening is a something to be done "just for the fun of it". Still other people appreciate their gardens because they offer a way to save money by growing their own veggies, fruits, herbs and spices. There are lots of reasons you should start your own garden. Don't forget that even though gardening involves lots of work, it also provides you with lots of enjoyment.
