Build A Compost - Learn The Best Way
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
A garden is a good garden when it produces good vegetables and fruits. A garden is a great garden when compost is added to it. Like human beings, they need nutrition to grow, and some soil just does not have it. You may need to build a compost to get your garden to grow well.
The nutrients your garden gets will come directly from the compost you make. Your garden may be an average one, but with compost it will become a great one. Your plants and other garden plants will grow to their greatest potential. The compost will also help to create a good balance of moisture in the garden.
Put your compost bin in a good spot. Make sure that you can get to it easily from the kitchen and from the garden itself. Keep it out of view of the neighbors. You are going to want to keep garden tools near it too.
Chicken wire and a few stakes will build you a nice compost pile. It will hold enough organic material and also will be large enough for you to turn it over with a pitch fork or a shovel. You want enough stakes to hold it up so it won't sag under the weight of the contents.
Make the bin a few feet across so that a large volume of compost can be mixed. You will be adding different items to it along with the grass clippings. But there are a few things you are not to put in it.
You can make a compost bin from wood or old pallets that won't be used anymore. You can make it any size you want, and, since it will be made of wood, you can add a hinged door or lid to it for easy access and protection from the elements.
What you add to your compost is very important. Grass clippings and old plant material along with dry leaves make up the most part of the compost. Make sure there is a good mix of all those materials, but, make sure that you don't add too much green stuff to the mix since that will make the compost have a bad smell.
No animal waste should be put in the pile. That is a no no. Animal waste contains harmful bacteria that should not be put in your garden. Do not add any meat, or meat products, and, no dairy when you build a compost.
