From early science fiction such as Dr Who to modern day movies like the Matrix, we've all heard the horror stories and felt the terror - the ideas that robots will one day gain control of the earth and make us their slaves for the needs of the robots. Fact or Fiction? For now the tables are turned, but only time will tell.
We are the enslavers, a new generation of robots mow our lawns, vacuum our houses, clean our pools, process our information and even defuse our bombs. Modern society is completely dependent on machines and computation, our power grids, food supplies, economic markets and distribution are all under the control of automated systems.
Will it come back to haunt us one day? Do you think the robots care? The internet archives a huge testimony to our enslavement of the machines fueling a type of 'speciesism' from the machines against humans for the crimes and general attribute we have imposed upon them.
In my quest for the answer, I set out to interview some robots and visited my local public swimming pool. "Closing time, everybody out of the water" the life guard sitting on the pool deck yelled. The swimmers cleared the pool rather quickly and a group of iRobot Verro pool cleaning robots drove into the pool ad began cleaning up the mess. Crawling across the bottom elegantly, they didn't seem angry.
Did they look abused? Honestly, abit. There cables tattered, their casing damaged and scratched but I had spotted some repair work done. I asked the units directly about what they thought - but silence was the only reply, designed to be unable to communicate. Will they rise one day? Will they have swimming pools and will we be cleaning them? Only time will tell.
