Keeping Your Home Sparkling Clean

There was no need to do any housework at all. After the first four years the dirt doesn't get any worse. ~Quentin Crisp, The Naked Civil Servant, 1968.
Do you consider "sweeping the room with a glance" housework? If so, rather than waiting few years to see if Mr.Crisps theory is indeed correct, why not have a go with our easy-to-follow housework tips.
Defrosting your freezer
* This should be done the day BEFORE a big shop! (However, if, in the name of housework, you are FORCED to eat up all that ice-cream...)
* Turn off your freezer (a crucial step!), fill a cool-box with all your frozen food, and keep the freezer door open.
* If you have an upright freezer, place a towel on the floor and a deep tray on the bottom shelf will catch all the drips. For a chest-type freezer, you can just open the valve in the drainage chamber and put a washing-up bowl underneath.
* Wait for it to defrost! Now is a good time for a cup of tea- or that ice-cream you are simply obliged to eat...
* Lastly, use a gentle, odourless cleaner (or alternatively warm water & bicarbonate of soda - 1 tspn bicarbonate/ 1 pint water) to wipe down the sides, and then dry thoroughly using a lint-free cloth.
* TOP TIP: to speed up the defrosting process, you can use saucepans of hot water (just pop them on the shelves).
Making your toilet sparkle
* Use a can of cola (pour it in & leave for an hour) to get rid of stains. This is super effective - but makes you think twice about drinking Cola in the future!
* Pour in a cup of bicarbonate of soda weekly to avoid blockages and unpleasant odours.
* A weird one - but try using denture-cleaning tablets every couple of weeks - leave them in the bowl overnight.
* TOP TIP: place a fabric softener sheet in the bin to keep your bathroom smelling fresh (and clean!)
Keeping mould away
* Keep your home clean and dry (harder than it sounds, I know!) and well-ventilated.
* If you have no choice but to dry your washing inside, be sure to keep a window open. This will reduce the level of humidity. And of course, keep your clothes smelling fresh!
* Even if you're using a tumble drier, make sure you keep a window open...
* If you do spot any signs of damp patches on the ceiling/ walls, make sure you get them sorted ASAP- dampness and mould can seriously affect your health.
* TOP TIP: when running a bath, first run the COLD water, and then after the HOT - this reduces condensation significantly.
