Explore The Three Ways On How Your Children Can Benefit From Reading
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
We all know how reading can benefit us both in our personal and business lives. When we read, we learn many things and we even have the opportunity to improve our communication skills although we may not be aware of it.
t is a reality that many people have been benefiting from reading in this way whether they are aware of it or not. For children, though, reading can be a very powerful tool. A good way to start them into the habit is by having the entire family join reading groups such as the Doubleday Large Print Book Club. There are three basic ways in which reading can help your kids.
First, we cannot deny that habitual reading makes them more likely to excel in their academics and eventually secure a good career and a lifetime of success. This does not apply to those who are occasional readers or to those who are fund of reading comic books in which incorrect or informal language is used. We are referring to those who have the opportunity to develop a love for reading so that they actually pick a worthy book themselves and just start flipping the pages without an adult or elder telling them. We are talking about those who would love to join book clubs or perhaps collect books by themselves. Having reading as a habit will help sharpen their minds because they can be able to master written words which involves mental processes. Though there are other means of doing this, reading is absolutely one of the ways preferred by many.
Second, a child who reads is a child who learns a lot. The subjects aren't limited. These books can include subject matters like those discussed in schools like biology, physics or chemistry. Even reading fiction has its benefits. A child's mind is opened to the many possibilities of life as he reads. The possibilities are dependent on the books he reads. It's true that experience is the greatest teacher but reading books is undoubtedly a good way of learning since knowing about certain life situations in advance can make us think twice about making it happen in real life. Children are exposed to different situations about life when they read books and when they are able to experience those situations in their own lives, they won't be oblivious about it since they have somehow gained a few insights from the books they read.
Third, reading improves a child's writing ability. While it is easy to say that a speaker is a good one just by listening to his pronunciation and delivery, not all good speakers are good writers. Sometimes, good speakers talk but wouldn't know how to construct good written sentences. But most probably, a person who is good in writing is also good in speaking. To improve a child's writing skills, it is important to expose him to the correct and formal usage of language through the published books that he reads. Doing this can promote subconscious mastery of the language which is the best method to learn something.
