Sibling Rivalry: The Best Ways to Stop It

Sibling rivalry is very normal among homes with more than one child. Jealousy - whether because the other has better toys or because one of the siblings feel the other is more loved by the parents - is also very normal among kids.
The best way to handle sibling rivalry is to stop it before it happens. I know this is one of those inevitable things, but you can minimize the damage if the parents are aware of it beforehand and handles it accordingly.
I have two kids age two and three years old. I have a sister myself, and I vividly remembered how much we fought when we were young so I was aware about sibling rivalry even before I had kids. I was especially cautious because my kids only have one year age gap, and I know the closer the kids' ages are, the more chances that they'll get jealous of each other.
Before my second child was born, I opened my eldest to the idea of having another baby in the house. I would show him dolls, and would "teach" him how to put it to sleep. I would also show him my tummy and would say "baby" while pointing to it.
It was already expected that everybody would dote on the new baby, so I and my husband made it sure that we would be extra affectionate to our child. We kept on giving him our attention so he won't think that he's being forgotten just because we have a new baby in the house.
Now that they're both toddlers, we make sure that we buy them the same toys. If one gets a train set, the other also does . Not only does this prevent them from getting jealous of each other, it also saves us a lot of stress from having to stop two children from fighting.
Whenever they fight, we hold them both accountable. We don't care who started it first or whose fault it is. We punish them by taking a privilege away such as a favorite toy (for an hour or two) or an hour away from the TV.
