Formal or Not - Graduations Rock
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
As the seasons change, so do our lives. Graduations are one way we celebrate closing one chapter in our lives and moving onto the next. With caps, gowns and diplomas, graduations were once more formal events. Today we may attend a graduation for a pre-school or children's dance class.
Starting graduation ceremonies early can introduce your young child to a pride of accomplishment. This great feeling can propel them to strive for excellence their whole lives. And it really takes nothing more than a casual party with a cake and home made diploma.
My kids are still young but I do have a daughter who's ready to move into middle school next year. It's all within the same building (elementary and middle schools) so there isn't a diploma ceremony for the kids. But the kids know that they are growing up. The simpler pleasures of play dates and girl scouts are getting replaced by planned trips to the stores for new cloths or practicing for cheerleader tryouts.
When I graduated from high school I was not really aware of just how big a change was ahead of me. I naively thought I'd keep all my old friends - even those who were not moving onto college with me - and just figured I might make a few new ones. Boy was I wrong on that count! But I did enjoy that event with all the fantastic gifts and attention. I felt so grown up.
As fun as my high school graduation was, I didn't expect the formality and pomp of my college graduation. All caps, gowns, diplomas. Why there were medals and sashes of different colors. Such an event for sure. What I've found is that the harder I had to work for the degree, the more I treasured the graduation ceremony. That sense of pride I discussed earlier certainly has been instilled with me.
So regardless of what school your student is graduating from, embrace the ceremony, the fun, and the memories. There are few things as exciting as the commencement of a new chapter in life.
