If you have children the discussion about getting a puppy has no doubt cropped up time and time again. You have also no doubt discussed the responsibilities your child or children will have to assume because you know what it takes to look after a new pup.
Before you bring your new little puppy home sit down with the entire family and decide about how you want to go about instilling the right kind of behavior from the beginning. This is to avoid inconsistency in the training from the start.
Training of your new pet should start the day you bring them into your home and should continue until you have a well-trained dog.
If this is the first time you are bringing a puppy into your house there are a few items you will need to take care of. Firstly inside the house you will need to designate a space where the dog will eat and sleep. Secondly it's advisable to make space outside where the pup can go to the toilet.
Once in agreement and everyone understands their roles, is when you should bring the puppy home. Instruction will also be easier to give to your puppy when you designate who in the family will be the "Alpha Dog" or the leader of the family. It should be someone who will be responsible for the dog's primary training.
Consistency is crucial to behavior training for you puppy. Simple things like always praising your dog when it does something good or reprimanding it in the same way when it does something wrong will go a long way in getting the best behavior.
There is a technique some people use to display disapproval to a new puppy and that is to 'growl' at it when it misbehaves. It does sound silly but this is how the puppy's mother would have let it know if it was in trouble. If it works for you then use it otherwise just a firm 'no!' should suffice.
Training a dog does not necessarily have to be 10 or 20 minutes per day but can occur throughout the day as training issues come up. For instance, if the dog is found lying on the bed and it is not supposed to be there, give a sharp, "No" and gently nudge the dog off of the bed.
It will also be in the best interest of effective behavior training if everyone uses the same techniques throughout the day.
Make no mistake, if you want order in your house with a dog around, you and the entire family will need to be involved in the behavior training. It will take a lot of patience but will be worth it in the end.
