Hair Fall in Men--Fact or Fiction?
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Do you or someone you love suffer from hair fall in men? Although our society generally accepts male baldness as a fact of life, many men who have thinning hair feel differently about it. Hair has come to signify strength and stamina and youth. Now this is not something that is talked about openly; it is more of a basic, common assumption that men have. But since male hair loss is far more prevalent than female hair loss, it is seen as a relatively minor condition, much like crows' feet.
Most men find their hair fall to be so disturbing because they associate it with getting old. And usually they're in the prime of their life when they start. Clinical studies have shown that half of all men start thinning by the time they reach 30. And 85% have patent baldness by the time they reach their fifth decade. But surprisingly, one-fourth of those men who have inherited their hair loss (95%) actually start thinning before their twenty-first birthday. Obviously the younger you are when you experience hair fall, the more upsetting it is.
So what reactions do men have when they discover hair fall? Well, we know that they're shocked. But once they overcome that initial shock, they immediately rush to find a cure-all treatment. So they hop online where they find a whole variety of hair fall treatments available. They find topical solutions, prescription pills and hair loss vitamins, hot oil, and shampoos. Many times they will also get checked out by a physician to make sure the vitals are okay and a dermatologist to examine their skin and hair follicles.
Now you can search a whole lot of places to find hair fall solutions for men, but the truth of the matter is that while there may be a fantastic product and another not so, every body is unique. And so everyone is going to handle it differently. Something that works for someone over here may not work for someone over there. One person may have an allergy; another person needs something super strong. And for yet another just the smallest help does the trick in the beginning.
Now what about this heredity, that you inherited this hair fall? What exactly did you inherit? Does your hair just start falling out for no reason? No. There is actually a cause, a physiological cause triggered by a chemical reaction in the brain. And what that is, is that you were actually born with a genetic sensitivity to a certain hormone called dihydrotestosterone or DHT for short. And what the brain does is it reads that hormone as being something that is toxic to your hair follicles. In reality dihydrotestosterone is not toxic. You are just sensitive to it much as if you were sensitive to dust or pollen or pet dander. Those things really are not toxic to you, but your brain just reads it that way.
Well, the same is true with hair fall in men. Your brain tells your body that this chemical, dihydrotestosterone, is toxic, when it's not--you're just sensitive to it. Thinking it is protecting you, your brain orders your hair follicles to shrink or close so that they will not come in contact with it anymore. The problem with that is that without a follicle you can grow no hair! And during the shrinking process, the hair starts to look unhealthy and fall out sooner.
So you've got two things going on there. You have hair that's not staying in as long, so it's shorter when it falls out. It's thinner. It's more brittle. It's dull-looking. It's just a different, weaker hair. And then you you are also losing hair more quickly.
So a good way to remedy hair fall is actually to block the chemical DHT for your brain so that it doesn't tell the hair follicle to shrink. And that's why a lot of people look for DHT-blocking treatments or pills. Minoxidil is FDA-approved as an ingredient that does in 80 percent of users, block DHT, and in time allow them to regrow hair.
