Teeth whitening kits have improved a lot since they debuted in the 1990's. It is no wonder, considering how much is spent on products designed to give people whiter teeth and brighter smiles. The original kits have gone, and the new kits are so much better. A trip down memory lane would show you just how far dental practices have improved since those first kits.
When these kits came on the market for the first-time they were pretty crude. They comprised of a plastic cup and some whitening gel. What you had to do was boil the cup and then mold it to the shape of your mouth. Once done, you would fill the cup with the correct amount of whitening gel, place the mold in your mouth and sleep with it in. While you slept the gel would whiten your teeth. That sounds pretty straightforward, doesn't it?
Basic chemistry proved to be the early kits downfall. There seemed to be no justification to wear the mold and gel throughout the night. The bleaching gel would lose its effect after an hour or two and sometimes was the cause of throat irritation. People came to think that the effects of these kits were not worth the risk of the damage they could do in the long run.
After realizing that these kits were not very effective, scientists devised new kits that so that they would only need to be worn for a shorter amount of time. Today's kits contain a greater concentration of the agent that is used in tooth bleaching. Most of the kits now contain strips that are worn for a very short time.
The new tooth whitening products available have made the earlier models totally obsolete. Strips and special toothpastes are now the favored choice among those looking to whiten their teeth. Yes, the gel still tastes terrible, but until they design a chocolate flavored bleaching gel you will have to live with it.
Toothpaste and toothbrushes have advanced a long way from the time of the ammonia aftertaste, Now you can have the pleasant flavor of cinnamon or mint when cleaning your teeth. Whitening kits have also come a long way, and for the most part, you can expect them to keep your teeth and enamel intact while getting rid of any tooth discoloration.
