One of the biggest hurdles, besides cost, that many face when thinking about bringing a treadmill home is simply not knowing just how much space they will take up on your floor. What many do not realize is that, to use one of these machines efficiently and safely, you need about 9 by 4.5 feet or 3 by 1.5 meters of floor space. If you live in a small apartment, this one piece of equipment may well take up your whole living room! Make sure, before you purchase your machine, that you have already determined the space where your machine will sit. A resistance running machine is one solution to your problem. They are very inexpensive because they are not motorized. This means that the belt only goes as fast as you do. They are also often made of lightweight materials, and may even collapse to be stored underneath a couch or bed. Beware! The easier it is to fold up your machine, the easier it is for you to forget that you have it. Also, beware of especially low priced resistance running machines as this may be a sign that they are made of poor quality materials, making them more likely to break down.
A motorized machine, on the other hand, is an investment in your health and may cost as much as five thousand dollars. Before you choose one of these, always test them out in the store to see how they feel to run on. The deck should absorb the impact of your step, whether you are running or walking, in order to prevent injury to your back, your knees and your ankles.
Even a basic model treadmill needs to have certain features to be truly effective and durable. Look for a machine that has at least 2.5 chp (continuous horse power), which does not exceed 12 mph and a 4 foot and 1.5 feet wide tread area. All motorized treadmills should have an emergency stop button; many do not. Check that yours does.
Once you have the basics, then you can look at special features that may make your treadmill the training tool of your dreams. Do you need to be able to watch television while you exercise to keep you motivated? What programs are built in to your training programs? What information does the display screen give you? Distance? Speed? Time? Only you know what is important to you and your training goals. These will help you make the decision that best suits your needs and wants.
