HEPA air filters or rather, High Efficiency Particulate Air filters are probably the best type of commercially available air filter available anywhere. Your average HEPA air filter will filter out 99.7 percent of particles 0.3micrometers and larger. To give you an idea of how small this is, a HEPA filter will filter out mold spores, the odors in the air, minute particles of dust and pretty much everything else.
A concept originally developed during the 1940s to filter air for radioactive particles, HEPA can be found in other uses too, one being in filtering bacteria and viruses out of the air in hospitals. Vacuum cleaners also employ this technology to clean air that it sucks through and prevents recirculation of dust and other matter.
The most predominant, and possibly the most useful implementation of the HEPA filter is in commercially available air purifiers. These filtering purifiers are extremely useful in combating the spread of infections and viruses like the flue and others.
A particularly useful feature of a HEPA filter is in filtering odors out of air. Many other types of air purifiers produce ozone, and while ozone in the ozone layer is a good thing, ozone is harmful to the human body and has been known to worsen the effects of asthma. Also, because of it not involving any chemical or electrical processes, HEPA filters produce no byproducts, harmful or otherwise.
Because of the way it is designed, these filters don't require cleaning or replacement all that often, fibers inside the filter attract particles and they attach to the fibers while not impeding airflow. In dusty environments it is possible to use an additional coarse filter to prefilter the air first.
Bad air quality is known to cause many respiratory and related ailments, and some of these are very serious, including pulmonary infection and even cancer. A good HEPA air filter in your air purifier can greatly improve your general health, your immune system, and your allergies.
