Tanning Bed Number One Precaution
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Everyone should know by now the dangers of ultraviolet radiation. We are exposed to high levels whenever we are out in the sun, but tanning beds are highly concentrated pods of UV rays making them more dangerous than the sun. It can damage softer tissues of the body if proper protection is not used.
It's always recommended to wear some covering to protect your eyes but for some reason, there are always people who do not heed the recommendation. They usually call them peepers or goggles and it's a good idea to own your own pair.
Even though it is required for tanning salons to provide a pair of peepers for all guests, it is a good idea to have your own. The fact that the salons will provide generic one-size-fit-all goggle, there is a good chance that it will not fit properly and is made of lesser quality that may not block all the UV rays. The quality of protection for your eyes should not be compromised.
Where the goggles don't fit perfectly, the corners tend to allow leaks and that is enough for the UV rays to damage your eyes. You really need a pair that doesn't allow leaks and doesn't have a chance of falling off accidentally. That is why it is a good idea just to own your own pair that seals the eyes completely and has a band to go around the head so they stay on.
You can also find disposable form for single uses although if you're a regular tanning bed goer there's no reason not to own a pair you can bring with you every time.
Even with your eye protection on, just for added safety, many authorities recommend keeping your eyes closed for the duration of the tanning session. It is not uncommon for UV rays to damage parts of the eye beyond the point of repair, so you can never take too many precautions.
Cataracts can also happen in your eye as a result of unprotected over exposure to UV rays. If your eyes are damaged beyond repair or surgery doesn't go well, you can end up blind.
It's such an easy step to avoid these problems when getting your tan on. Although tanning beds have other health risks to other parts of your body, your eyes are among the more sensitive parts and even irregular use can put your eyes at risk.
The good news for those who want a darker tone is that there are options other than tanning beds or sun tanning. In fact, tanning lotions are touted by many health associations as the best way to get some color on your skin because of the relatively minimal health risks involved.
