Up until fairly recently, you'd have to travel to Italy to experience the pleasure of Italian ice cream. Today, Gelato - with its great taste and texture - is popular worldwide. Gelaterias - the boutiques where you can purchase gelato - are cropping up in the cities and towns of many countries, including America. You can also find many recipes for gelato if you want to make it yourself.
Even though Italian and American ice cream would appear to be the same, there are important distinctions between the two products. One of the biggest differences is that gelato contains only about half the butterfat that American ice cream has. This leads a lot of people to conclude that, if you had to choose between the two, gelato would be better for your health. The consistency of gelato is different than ice cream, also. Italian ice cream tends to be more dense - with less air whipped in - and, therefore the flavor and texture are condensed. Traditionally, the serving temperature of Italian ice cream is 10?F warmer than America ice cream, in spite of the fact that it is frozen. This contributes to its flavor, as it melts more easily in your mouth when you bite into it.
A lot of people comment that regular ice cream no longer appeals to them after experience the rich flavor of a true gelato. The flavor of gelato is so much more robust than ice cream and the consistency is thicker.
The advantage regular ice cream has, however, is the fact that it is less expensive. Due to all the fresh, natural ingredients used to prepare authentic gelato, it is not reasonable to expect it to be priced as low as ice cream. You can save money on gelato by buying the fresh ingredients at your local farmer's market or grocery store and preparing it yourself. This too will require some investment, but in the long run it's cheaper when you buy all the ingredients yourself. You, of course, have the choice of only enjoying gelato as a special treat from time to time.
Which is healthier - ice cream or gelato? Compare the ingredients and you can make this decision for yourself. It's not possible to hypothesize about the calories in a serving of gelato, because it can be made from many different combinations of ingredients. If you're trying to cut back on calories, your best bet would be fruit based sorbets, which are not literally a type of ice cream, but are often sold along with gelato. In general, gelato tends to have fewer calories than American ice cream, simply because it's made from milk rather than cream. Soy or yogurt are two alternative ingredients you can use in your gelato recipes that would reduce the caloric content even more. Sugar-free gelato is also available for those who have to limit the amount of sugar in their diets.
More and more people every day are discovering Italian ice cream and its fame is spreading rapidly throughout the world. There are benefits to eating gelato instead of regular ice cream. When traditional gelato is prepared the way it has always been in Italy, it is made with all fresh, natural ingredients. This obviously makes it better for your health than mass-produced ice cream. Thanks to the information age, it's now possible to be inundated with information on Italian ice cream. Are you looking for recipes, a gelato machine, or a local source?
