The Many Hazards of Childhood Obesity
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
It hasn't been so long since obesity was limited to the world of adulthood. Over the last thirtyish years or so the situation in the US has changed definitely for the worse. In addition to more adults being overweight, children and teenagers are developing this condition at ever younger years. In terms of children, the most influential and obvious people for them to learn from are their parents but standard education as well as raising awareness are important too. But it is the parents who must provide guidance and also be a positive role model for their children. Kids who suffer from obesity face almost immediate threats to both their physical and emotional well being. If you go beyond that you'll be able to see that there are a lot of dangerous health risks that can and most likely will surface later on. So for kids it is a terrible one-two punch that is nearly impossible to beat and overcome.
The medical conditions that will be experienced by any obese child or teen are highly variable. There are quite a few different influences here and some of them are actually genetics. Severely obese children can easily develop various types of conditions and problems of the joints and bones. Very often problems associated with the load-bearing joints will arise. The feet, ankles, knees and hips are particularly prone to skeletal stress. Typically the kids will experience joint pain in their backs as well as constant low but steady pressure filled swelling around all of their joints. Arthritis is a common problem with these kids and teens too. Widespread research has proven that kids who suffer from obesity are far more likely to suffer from sleep apnea than kids who aren't obese. This is a condition that is quite serious because it actually blocks the child's airway while he or she is sleeping. Kids who are overweight and obese are more likely to snore too but, according to researchers, that is actually deceiving. It's also possible that the snoring is a symptom of something called OSA or obstructive sleep apnea. One possible approach to the problem is a procedure called an adenotonsillectomy which is meant to treat the condition specifically in young people.
The prospects do not seem very promising for an obese child for many reasons. When an obese young child becomes an adult there is a huge list of health risks, as well as diseases, that the child faces. Is there a possibility to reverse the obese condition?
We know that obese teens are more likely to become very obese adults by 16 times more than a normal teen. This is clearly not a good thing for those teens. Since the risk factors are actually developing when they are young, they are looking at a severely diminished quality of life as an adult.
If you are a child or young adult, it is incredibly important that you find a competent and qualified adult to talk to about your condition. It is possible that you need to become educated about what has caused the condition. The good news is that you can absolutely do something about this and it is never ever too late to begin working your way back to optimum health.
