Childhood Obesity - Dooming Kids For the Rest of Their Lives
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Time is an important part of the nature of lots of weight-related health problems. This means that sometimes it can take a long time for the more serious symptoms to start showing up. Still, the stage definitely gets set for later on in life when a child is obese. Still, kids typically don't suffer from as many medical issues as obese adults do--their youth protects them somewhat. But the condition in and of itself is definitely a risk factor for later on when adult sized conditions and problems develop. Some of the most severe problems are diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, liver disease, heart disease and stroke.
Yes, we mentioned Type II diabetes because it is right up there as a real possibility for obese children, teens and adults. Of course, it does make a certain sum of sense that it might happen. This specific kind of diabetes is different than Type I because it can be prevented sometimes. Prolonged sedentary living and weight issues like obesity are two of the leading contributors to developing this disease. What happens, at least for those who are obese, is that the weight puts an added demand for insulin on the body. This is because there is more body there that needs to receive it. Type II diabetes happens, then, as the body becomes more resistant to the insulin it produces.
Just about all obese people suffer from any of a number of psychological issues as well. When a child feels like they are constantly abused by their peers it can lead to things like severe stress, poor self esteem, a lack of self confidence and even self hatred sometimes. All of these are silent problems that many obese kids and teens try to deal with all alone. Once the situation has progressed far enough and for years, then that person may develop sociopathic behaviors. We have no data about the number of obese high school students who go on to attend college. We are willing to bet that the number isn't that big and that there are a lot more obese high school students than there are obese college students. Could you really blame them for choosing not to go when they probably imagine those years to be just as torturous as their high school years?
Researchers are still trying to figure out if there is a direct connection between early onset puberty (especially in girls though boys can deal with it too) and obesity in kids. Obviously, though, there is also some common sense in looking at what we already know. For example, we already know that obese kids and teens see puberty set in earlier and grow faster than other kids. But it is a situation in which a clear determination of causality needs to be made. While this is obviously not that serious a threat as the other obesity related problems, there are definitely serious implications that accompany abnormally young ages for the onset of puberty.
It's easy to see that these children are at a major social and physical disadvantage once they have gotten to this point. We all know that it is difficult to lose weight and that the only way to truly make it happen is when you have a high level of determination and support to make it happen. Friends and parents need to be as supportive as possible. Young adults and kids alike are resilient people and have an easier time bouncing back once healthy directions have been taken. Of course, it depends on whether or not any medical conditions are present.
